TUNUNAK -- The tide was out, and before me stretched the mud flats I often see residents walking out over, collecting clams. The mouth of the river was shallow; ripples from the stones and rocks on the bottom cut lines in the surface. I sat at the edge and drank coffee from my thermos, waiting for the tide to change.
